The New Zealand Government is reviewing the Holidays Act 2003 and has called for submissions from the public.
One proposal is the ability for employees to be able to trade their fourth week of annual holiday for cash.
Another being considered is to allow workers to swap existing public holidays for holidays that mean more to their religious or ethnic group. Examples could be swapping:
· 2 January (which is a public holiday in NZ) for Duvali;
· Queen’s Birthday for Gandhi Jayanti;
· Auckland Anniversary Day for the Qingming Festival; or
· Good Friday for Ramadan.
The Rotorua Chamber will be making a submission based on the responses to this survey.
